What this tool does

Captain Impact measures what your captaincy choices actually did to your rank. Enter your FPL Team ID (no password needed) and it compares the captain you picked each gameweek against the most-captained player and the best possible pick, showing the points you gained or lost from the armband alone.

Why captaincy is worth auditing

The captain doubles one player’s score, which makes it the single highest-leverage weekly decision in FPL — over a season, captaincy differences alone commonly separate mini-league rivals by 100+ points. Most managers remember their one great differential call and forget five quiet failures; this tool replaces that memory with the actual numbers.

How to use the result

  • Consistently below the template captain? You are over-differentialing. Defaulting to the obvious pick is statistically hard to beat.
  • Matching the template every week while chasing a leader? You cannot close a gap by copying — planned, occasional differential captaincy is how you make ground.
  • Compare with your mini-league rivals to see whether the gap between you is captaincy or squad structure — the fix is different for each.

Data & limitations

All data comes live from the official FPL API using your public Team ID. “Best possible captain” is hindsight — nobody hits it weekly; it is a ceiling for context, not a realistic target. Data appears once the season is underway and you have played at least one gameweek.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need my FPL password?

No. The tool reads public data via your Team ID — the number in your FPL points-page URL. We never ask for FPL credentials.

What is a good captaincy record?

Beating the most-captained player’s return over the season puts you ahead of the large majority of managers — the template captain is a strong baseline.

Should I ever captain a differential?

When protecting a lead, rarely. When chasing, a low-ownership captain in a good fixture is one of the few levers that moves a mini-league quickly — our captaincy strategy guide covers when.

FPL Captain Impact Tracker

See exactly how your captain pick performed compared to your rivals in the league. The captain choice is the single most impactful decision each gameweek — it doubles your player's points and can be the difference between climbing or falling in your mini-league standings.

How Captain Impact Is Calculated

We calculate captain impact by comparing your captain's doubled score against what you would have scored with your vice-captain or the most popular captain pick. The net impact shows you how many points you gained or lost from your captaincy decision relative to your league rivals.

Captain Selection Tips

  • Home advantage matters — players score significantly more points at home on average
  • Check fixture difficulty — always captain players with favourable FDR ratings
  • Form over fixtures — a player in hot form against a tough opponent can still deliver
  • Differential captains — picking an unpopular captain can create big league swings

Frequently Asked Questions

What is captain impact in FPL?

Captain impact measures how much your captain choice affected your gameweek rank and league position. A positive impact means your captain gained you ground on rivals; negative means you lost ground.

How important is the FPL captain choice?

Extremely important. Your captain scores double points, making it worth up to 15-30 points per gameweek. Over a season, good captaincy can be worth 200+ points — often the difference between winning and losing a mini-league.

Should I always captain the most popular player?

Not necessarily. Going with the popular pick protects your rank, but picking a differential captain who scores big can create huge gains. It depends on whether you're chasing or protecting a league position.
