Luis Suárez will not be headed to Major League Soccer. Earlier on Tuesday, CBS reporter Klaus German reported that a transfer to MLS was possible. ESPN’s Taylor Twellman then suggested that Los Angeles FC, who had already signed Gareth Bale and Giorgio Chiellini earlier this month, were interested. Other clubs were also mentioned, but ultimately Suárez opted for a different path and announced on his Twitter channel that he is going to return to Club Nacional.

The forward recently confirmed in an interview with radio station Sport 890 that he had five or six offers from MLS clubs after his contract with Atlético expired. He has been linked with D.C. United, now coached by former Man United legend Wayne Rooney. “The market in MLS is very complex,” Suárez said. “Some clubs want you but don’t have any open spots, so it would have to be in January. Other clubs want you now, but I have to weigh up whether they have a chance of qualifying for the play-offs.” The regular season ends at the beginning of October. LAFC currently lead the Western Conference with 45 points after 21 games played.

The veteran reportedly had decided to return to Montevideo on Friday before rumors about a potential transfer to MLS opened up. In recent weeks, Suárez had expressed surprise that there had been no contact between him and Club Nacional earlier. That, however, mattered little in the end as the striker has now made his return to Uruguay official.

After 16 years in Europe: Suárez returns to Uruguay

Suárez left the club where he made his first professional steps for Europe in 2006. There, he first played for Groningen before moving on to Ajax, Liverpool, Barcelona and Atlético. At Barça, he reached a career-high market value of €90 million in 2015. Originally, there were speculations that Suárez would continue his career in Europe after the end of his contract with the Colchoneros.
