Former Real Madrid and Bayern Munich playmaker James Rodríguez has completed a move to Greek giants Olympiacos, according to a statement from the club on Thursday evening. The 31-year-old Colombian international was previously under contract with Qatari club Al-Rayyan until 2024, but the deal was seemingly cut short, allowing Rodríguez to return to European football.
Whether the Greeks, who recently attracted attention with the signing of free agent Marcelo, will have to pay parts or even all of James’ salary, estimated at €6 million per season, remains to be seen. An agreement with Galatasaray is said to have failed, as the player did not want to accept a pay cut. According to reports, the club from the Middle East could accept a 50-50 split.
James had moved to Qatar from Everton just under a year ago and has since been directly involved in 12 goals in 15 appearances. The Stars League’s most valuable player had already announced in February that he would like to leave the country. “I would like to return to Europe, why not,” James said. “I have the requirements; I am getting into a rhythm and will wait and see what happens. Another good option is to go to the United States. I really like that, but there is still time for that.”
