Could he return to Camp Nou?

French forward Ousmane Dembélé has officially left Barcelona, following the player’s contract at the Spanish club expiring. That now means that the 25-year-old winger is technically a free agent and will be able to join any club in the world for free, assuming he and his future side can agree terms on a new contract. Much was expected of Dembélé when he made the move to Camp Nou in 2017 from Borussia Dortmund for a fee that ultimately reached as high as €140 million. Following a spell in Germany which saw the player bag 10 goals and 22 assists in 50 games, the France international was set to reach new heights in Spain. However, that didn’t exactly go to plan.

Although the 25-year-old talent ends his five-year spell with the club with a decent record of 32 goals and 34 assists in 149 games for Barca, much of his time at the club was dogged by constant injuries. Indeed, over the course of the past five seasons, Dembélé missed no less than 102 games through injury – which accounts for no less than 40 percent of his total game time at the club. However, despite such a tormented time at Barca, there are still some hopes that Dembélé may end up signing a new deal and opting to stay put, rather than opt for new pastures and perhaps a bigger paycheck.

Bayern, PSG or Chelsea? Dembélé may end up staying at Barca

Indeed, while the French forward may have been hoping for more offers to consider this summer, reports from England suggest that Dembélé has instead been left to mull over a single proposition: the very same deal he has always had at Barca. According to CBS Sport’s Ben Jacobs, Barca’s contract proposal to the player remains Dembélé’s only formal option, despite now technically leaving the club. According to Jacobs, Liverpool, Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain have all cooled their interest in the player and Chelsea, who remain intrigued by the player’s availability, are unwilling to match Dembélé’s current demands, which are to double his base salary at Barca, which stood at €6m per year. As such, despite the clear difficulties that the player and club have had to endure over the past five years, Dembélé may end up staying put at the Camp Nou next season.
