DFB Pokal Exit
Historic DFB Pokal defeat for Bayern Munich, a magical night for Borussia Mönchengladbach. Germany’s record DFB Pokal winners were smashed 0-5 (0-3) by an incredible Gladbach side on Wednesday night. It was Bayern’s biggest defeat in the Pokal and their highest defeat in all competition in 43 years. The result could have been even higher.
For Gladbach’s head coach Adi Hütter, in the meantime, it was a deja vu moment. Hütter was in charge of Eintracht Frankfurt on Nov. 2, 2019, the last time Bayern Munich were scored on five times (5-1). That result marked the end of former Bayern coach Niko Kovac. Julian Nagelsmann, who is still in quarantine due to COVID is unlikely to suffer the same fate. “That was shocking,” Bayern sporting director Hasan Salihamidzic said after the game. “We weren’t there. We didn’t win a single challenge in the first half, there were no transitions. That was a collective blackout, actually inexplicable.”
Nonetheless, the result against Gladbach will cause shockwaves in German football and the Bayern universe. Gladbach, after all, offered a blueprint on how to beat the Rekordmeister. The Foals were relentless in their attack Manu Koné opened the scoring just 2 minutes into the game. Ramy Bensebaini then first doubled the lead in the 15th minute and then made it 3-0 from the spot in the 21st minute.

3-0 down at half Bayern came out guns blazing. But Gladbach matched the Rekordmeister stride for stride and made the most out of the openings in defense. First, Breel Embolo made it 4-0 on a counter in the 51st minute and then 5-0 in the 57th minute. Bayern were stunned and at times lucky that Gladbach did not add another to further add to what was a historic night at the Borussia-Park.
