Could eclipse Davies fee

On Saturday, Ricardo Pepi was kept off the scoresheet as FC Dallas lost 1-0 on the road against the Vancouver Whitecaps. A rare occurrence this season, the 18-year-old has scored 12 goals in 25 Major League Soccer games and has quickly emerged as the top number 9 prospect in the league. Pepi’s development has also not been left unnoticed abroad, with 90Min reporting that Ajax representatives were in the stands on Saturday to scout the forward.

Sources have told 90Min that the Dutch club liked what they saw and that they will soon make an offer. Dallas, in the meantime, are understood to seek a deal that would eclipse the record set by Alphonso Davies when he became the most expensive homegrown player in MLS history. Bayern paid an initial $11 million for Davies but that deal could grow to $22 million overall—one of the bonuses payments were triggered when Bayern won the Champions League in 2020

Transfermarkt also understands that Bayern Munich are one of the two clubs mentioned in the 90Min report. Pepi has previously trained with FC Bayern, and the Rekordmeister would like to sign the striker alongside teammate Justin Che this summer. Bayern Munich have a cooperation agreement in place with Dallas and the team at the Bayern Campus, where Bayern’s youth teams are located, have kept a close eye on the striker’s development.

Bayern, Ajax and Italian clubs – Pepi has many options

In Ajax, Bayern Munich now have a clear competitor in their attempt to sign the striker. The Dutch club will be more likely to provide first team minutes immediately. That might provide them an edge over the Rekordmeister. The two are, however, not alone in their hunt for the striker. Several Serie A clubs and one of Bayern’s close competitors in the Bundesliga are also interested.
