Loyalty “most important”
Unai Emery will not leave Europa League winners Villarreal to join in relegation danger Newcastle United. “Villarreal is my home; I am 100% committed,” Emery said on Wednesday when asked about a potential move to the Premier League (cited by Sport).
English newspaper The Times reported on Tuesday that a transfer was imminent. Following Villarreal’s 2-0 victory over Young Boys in the Champions League, the 50-year-old confirmed the interest of the Premier League but also pointed out that there was no official offer. On Wednesday, Emery added that loyalty to the team and owner Fernando Roig are the most important aspects for him. “I am thankful that a great club is interested, but I am even more thankful to be here, and I have told Fernando Roig my decision, which was based on the engagement and respect that I experience from him.”

On Tuesday, Emery said to the Guardian: “The only thing that is true is that I have been told of their [Newcastle’s] interest, and I pretty much don’t have more news than that. There is no offer, which in any case would have to come via the club. So there’s no more beyond that [which would make] me say I’m going.” He added: “I do not open or close the door. I am waiting, and I would talk to Fernando [Roig, the Villarreal president] and the club, for whom I have respect. My dedication is where I am.”

The Times reported on Tuesday that the former Arsenal coach has a €6 million exit clause. Newcastle United have recently undergone an ownership change, and a Saudi consortium owns 80% of the shares. The new owners want to turn the Magpies into a top European club similar to what has happened previously at Manchester City and Chelsea.
According to Spanish reporter Guillem Balague, Emery, however, has doubts that the project could be successful. Newcastle United are currently 19th in the Premier League, and Emery wants to wait and see how things will develop at the Magpies. A transfer in the summer, when the structures at the club are more visible, remains a possibility.
