Complete update in Türkiye

In the weeks ahead of the World Cup, Transfermarkt has undergone a market value analysis of all major leagues—the competition with the first complete update will be Türkiye’s Süper Lig. Once again, prominent former stars, who moved to Türkiye in the summer, have seen their market values downgraded. Among them, Mauro Icardi, Lucas Torreira, Bertrand Traoré, Dele Alli and João Pedro. Younger players playing for top clubs like Fenerbahçe and Galatasaray, in the meantime, have seen their market values increase. Those players include Arda Güler, Ferdi Kadioglu, Yunus Akgün, and Sacha Boey. Altogether the big four teams, Gala, Fener, Besiktas, and titleholders Trabzonspor, all have seen their squad values drop. Record champions Galatasaray see the biggest drop by €12.5m to €140.8m and to third in the market value ranking.

“At some of the better-known stars; those who previously played in one of the top five leagues, their current market value does not match the level of the Süper Lig, especially when their performances have also dropped,” Area Manager Türkiye, Gökhan Yagmur, said. “Alli and Icardi are the best examples; both were among the most valuable players in the world.” Alli (Besiktas), Traoré (Basaksehir), and Torreira (Galatasaray) arrived from England, and they all see their market value reduced by €2m. The first two dropped to €14m, and the Uruguayan, in the meantime, drops to €15m.

Striker Icardi arrived with a market value of €22m on loan from PSG at Gala, but he drops by €4.5m to €17.5m. “Icardi once again writes the headlines off the pitch—his separation from his wife Wanda Nara—and not with good performances on the pitch, which has further hurt his image,” Yagmur said. “Nonetheless, the Argentine remains the most valuable player in the Süper Lig.”

Market values: Downgrades for Galatasaray’s Aktürkoglu and Demir

Galatasaray’s Kerem Aktürkoglu is another player with a significant downgraded. Voted Türkiye’s player of the year by the TM community last season, Aktürkoglu sees his market value drop by €2m to €13m. Then there is new signing Yusuf Demir; he dropped by €1.5m to €7.5m. “He isn’t playing as well within the team as last year and is still looking for his best role this season,” Yagmur said. “Also, despite having a good season, there were almost no strong offers for him in the summer. The only club with some interest were Olympique Lyon, who offered €9m.”

Demir, in the meantime, saw his market value slightly increase after joining from Rapid Vienna for €6m despite having limited time left on his contract—but because of bureaucratic reasons the Austrian with Turkish roots has been playing very little. “Because of the foreign limitation rules—clubs have to have at least three Turkish players on the pitch at all time—Demir hasn’t been playing at all,” Yagmur said. “Demir might have to leave in January if the club can’t find a way around those rules. The alternatives have been better, which has limited his playing time significantly.”

At Fener, goalkeeper Altay Bayindir sees his second market value drop in a row. The same is true for his national team rival Ugurcan Cakir (Trabzonspor). “Fundamentally, both lack offers from clubs playing in European top leagues,” Yagmur said. “On top of that, both have struggled with poor performances for the national team and at their respective clubs. Bayindir has been slightly worse than Cakir, who has managed to stabilize his performance. Both will drop in market value, Altay slightly more,” Yagmur said about the market value drops by €2m to €13m and €1m to €14m, respectively.

Fenerbahçe’s Kadioglu among winners – Boey & Ndayishimiye up

Thanks to the foreign limitation rule, some Turkish players like Kadioglu (Fenerbahçe) and Akgün (Galatasaray) see their market values increase. The first goes up by €1.5m to €12m and is one of the biggest winners of the update. “He is a joker for Jorge Jesus,” Yagmur said. “You can use him almost everywhere, and he always does a good job. He has become a national team player, and Ajax are interested.”

Other players with a significant increase are defenders Youssouf Ndayishimiye from Basaksehir (from €3m to €7m) and Galatasaray’s Boey (€2.5m to €6.5m). “He has seen a significant U-turn,” Yagmur said about Boey. “First, he wanted to leave, but then he decided to stay. Because of Léo Dubois’ injury, Boey is now the regular starter, and he has made the most of his opportunity.”

How Transfermarkt market values work

The Transfermarkt market values are calculated, taking into account various pricing models. A major factor is the Transfermarkt community, whose members discuss and evaluate player market values in detail. In general, the Transfermarkt market values are not to be equated with transfer fees.

The goal is not to predict a price but an expected value of a player in a free market. Both individual transfer modalities and situational conditions are relevant in determining market values. Examples of this are listed below. Transfermarkt does not use an algorithm (you can find the detailed market value definition here).
