Manchester United have made inquiries about RB Leipzig forward Timo Werner, it has been reported.

The former Chelsea Man struggled massively in front of goal during his two seasons at Stamford Bridge and made a return to Leipzig, who received £50million for him.

Werner has had to play a support role this seasonAFP

Sky Sports in Germany reports he’s unhappy with his situation back in Germany. Werner’s contract with Leipzig runs until 2026.

talkSPORT understands Man United are actively assessing the market ahead of the January transfer window, however, it’s not clear if their interest in Werner is firm.

The rapid 27-year-old was one of Europe’s most wanted forwards after a 34-goal season with Leipzig in 2019/20 and Chelsea won the battle against then-league champions Liverpool for his signature.

However, despite winning the Champions League under Thomas Tuchel in 2021, he returned to the Bundesliga in the summer of 2022 for £25m after scoring just 23 goals in 89 games.

Returning to his scoring ways last season, Werner netted 16 times, but this campaign things have changed.

Falling out of favour under Marco Rose, Werner is now firmly behind Benjamin Sesko and Lois Openda in the striker pecking order in East Germany.

That’s hindered his chances at his home Euro 2024 tournament next season, not being selected in the Germany squad, despite the nation being managed by his former Leipzig coach Julian Nagelsmann.

United are desperately struggling for production up top, with £72m summer signing Rasmus Hojlund yet to find the net in the Premier League, despite lighting up the Champions League with five goals.

Marcus Rashford, Alejandro Garnacho and Anthony Martial all only have two apiece, while Antony, Pacundo Pellistri, Jadon Sancho and Mason Mount are all scoreless.

Werner, meanwhile, has two goals and an assist in 371 minutes of action this season, and remains a huge asset in counter-attacking situations.
