Update Süper Lig

Transfermarkt.com.tr has completely updated the market values of the Turkish Süper Lig. Despite a small drop of €2 million. Fenerbahçe remain first with a squad value of €133 million. There are some changes, however, in the teams behind Fener. Because Besiktas dropped by €6 million to €102 million, the club headed by new coach Valérien Ismaël dropped to fourth in the squad value ranking. League leaders Trabzonspor (+€5m to €112.1m) and also Galatasaray (-€2m to €104.2m), who have the biggest winner of the update in Kerem Aktürkoglu, have moved ahead.

Winger Aktürkoglu sees his market value grow for a sixth time in a row, from €11 million to €15 million, making him the third most valuable player in the Turkish first division. “He is the shooting star of the league—despite the fact that he is playing for the 15th-placed team in the league,” Area Manager Turkey Gökhan Yagmur (Croncho) said about the Turkish national team player. “You can see his talent in the Europa League. Against Barcelona, in particular, he has been very good and has been linked with a transfer to other clubs.” Aktürkoglu has been linked to Bundesliga clubs VfL Wolfsburg, VfB Stuttgart and 1899 Hoffenhiem.

Slightly ahead of Aktürkoglu in the market value ranking is Fenerbahçe’s Altay Bayindir (+€500,000 to €15.5m) and Trabzonspor’s goalkeeper Ugurcan Cakir; his market value grew to €18 million and remains in first. “Cakir has manifested his position as the number one in Turkish football,” Yagmur said. “He is showing fantastic performances and is a major reason why Trabzonspor are first in the league standings. But because his market value was already high for Turkey, he only increased by another €1 million. To further see his market value grow and break through the €20 million barrier, Cakir will have to move on or show his skills on a bigger international stage.”

Update Süper Lig: Crespo, Kim & Güler among market value winners at Fenerbahçe

Bayindir aside, new signings at Fenerbahçe are among the market value winners. Miguel Crespo (+€2.5m to €5m), Min-jae Kim (+€2m to €11m), and super talent Arda Güler (+€1.45m to €2.2m) see their market value increase significantly.

Güler gave his debut in August and was the third-youngest player in club history and is on a similar level to Bayern Munich’s talent Paul Wanner. “He is a fine footballer,” Yagmur said. “Very calm for his age with good vision. The club is slowly integrating him into the squad, but if he continues this way, the sky is the limit for him.”

Berisha and Özil drop – Biggest loss for Tufan and Pjanic

The red marker, however, has found teammates Mergim Berisha and Mesut Özil. Forward Berisha dropped by €1.5 million to €7.5 million, and recently suspended captain Özil dropped by €0.7m to €3 million—the lowest market value since 2008 when he still played for Werder Bremen. “Özil’s transfer has not worked out,” Yagmur said. “Except for perhaps the first three months, there was never a harmonious relationship between the club and the playmaker. He has often been the center of attention, just not on the field. Business and advertising deals or creating groups in the dressing room that worked against the coach have underlined his time at Fenerbahçe.”

Biggest losers of the update are Fener’s Ozan Tufan and Barcelona loanee Miralem Pjanic from last year’s double winners Besiktas. The two central midfielders drop their market value by €3.5 million and are now listed at €6.5 million and €11.5 million, respectively. As a result, Pjanic dropped out of the top five of the most valuable players in the Süper Lig.

“Signed as the big stars of the league in an endeavor to further strengthen a championship side and to be competitive in the Champions League, the two disappointed,” Yagmur said. “The team that played brilliant football last season couldn’t sustain that performance, and Pjanic has been invisible. On top of that, there have been many injuries.”

How Transfermarkt market values work

The Transfermarkt market values are calculated, taking into account various pricing models. A major factor is the Transfermarkt community, whose members discuss and evaluate player market values in detail. In general, the Transfermarkt market values are not to be equated with transfer fees.

The goal is not to predict a price but an expected value of a player in a free market. Both individual transfer modalities and situational conditions are relevant in determining market values. Examples of this are listed below. Transfermarkt does not use an algorithm (you can find the detailed market value definition here).
