Romo biggest loser

Transfermarkt has updated the 252 players of Mexico’s Liga MX. The two biggest winners of the update play for the current leader of the Clausura, CF Pachuca—the midfield duo Victor Guzmán and Erick Sánchez received a plus of €3 million. The most valuable player in the league, despite a drop of €2 million, remains UANL Tigres’ star Florian Thauvin. The biggest loser of the update is Monterrey’s Luis Romo; his market dropped from €10 million to €7 million.

While the 27-year-old Guzmán saw his market value increase to €7.5 million, Erick Sánchez, who has been involved in eight goals directly in 23 games, increased by €7 million. Together with defender Yairo Moreno—his market value dropped by €500,000—the two form the top three of the most valuable players in the club’s internal ranking.

With an increase of €2 million to now €3.5 million, Israel Reyes from third-placed Puebla is one of Liga MX’s biggest market value winners. The 21-year-old has established himself as a starting center-back at his club and is one of the reasons for Los Camoteros’ good form recently. The defender was also called up to the Mexican national team at the end of last year.

Market values Liga MX: Tigres and Monterrey with the biggest drops

Among the teams with the biggest squad value drops were Tigres and Monterrey: the latter saw Luis Romo drop €3 million (to €7m); he also lost his status as the second most valuable player in the league. “Already after his transfer from Querétaro FC to Cruz Azul (in 2020) and then to Monterrey (2022), Romo struggled to maintain his form,” Transfermarkt market value admin Klinsfrau said about the 26-year-old. “He isn’t the player of former days and struggles to make a difference.”

Tigres’ star Florian Thauvin, in the meantime, maintained his first place as the most valuable player in Liga MX. But the Frenchman’s market value was again reduced, this time to €12 million. Despite an increased form in the last few months, the former Newcastle and Marseille star has failed to fulfill the high expectations that came with his surprise transfer.

How Transfermarkt market values work

The Transfermarkt market values are calculated, taking into account various pricing models. A major factor is the Transfermarkt community, whose members discuss and evaluate player market values in detail. In general, the Transfermarkt market values are not to be equated with transfer fees.

The goal is not to predict a price but an expected value of a player in a free market. Both individual transfer modalities and situational conditions are relevant in determining market values. Examples of this are listed below. Transfermarkt does not use an algorithm (you can find the detailed market value definition here).
