Manchester United’s flight to Newcastle has been cancelled, forcing a late change of travel plans for the Premier League clash on Saturday.

The Red Devils now face a three-hour coach journey to St James’ Park ahead of the 8pm kick-off – live on talkSPORT.

The squad arrived at Manchester Airport at 10am on Saturday morning ahead of an 11am flight.

But the short plane journey was cancelled due to bad weather and technical problems.

Instead, the squad will travel to the North East by bus in a 158-mile trip.

It is understood Man United had a contingency plan in place due to freezing cold weather conditions across the UK.

The Red Devils could face yet more delays after the Met Office warned that road journeys are likely to be affected by icy conditions.

Multiple flights have been suspended in the UK after temperatures dropped below minus 10C in some areas overnight.

A number of football matches across the country have been called off due to frozen pitches.

When they arrive, United will be hoping to bounce back from their disappointing 3-3 draw at Galatasaray on Wednesday night.

But this is far from the ideal preparation for manager Erik ten Hag, who is known for his meticulous pre-match schedules.

Despite protests from climate activists, short-haul flights have become the norm for Premier League sides to improve player welfare and performance.

Earlier this season, Man City manager Pep Guardiola was upset his team could not catch a flight back from Newcastle, bemoaning the loss of precious time during a busy run of fixtures.

The games are coming thick and fast for United, too, with four matches in the next 11 days, starting with the trip to Newcastle.
