Becomes most valuable player

It is official, Jefferson Savarino has left Brazilian club Atlético Mineiro and returned to Major League Soccer side Real Salt Lake City. RSL made the transfer official on Wednesday, the final day of the MLS primary transfer window. With a fee of $2.5 million, Savarino becomes the second most expensive signing in club history, and the Venezuelan has signed a deal until 2025 with a club option for 2026.

Atlético Mineiro already announced the transfer on April 29, and the Brazilian Série A side also published the exact figures. The Galo originally paid $2 million for 60% of the player’s economic rights when they signed Savarino from RSL in February 2020. RSL have now repurchased 40% of the Venezuelan’s economic rights for $2.5 million and now hold 80% of the player’s rights. Both clubs value Savarino at $6.25 million overall.

“Bringing Jefferson back to Salt Lake has been an exciting process in recent months—obviously, we have great memories of him here representing our badge, our colors, our community, and certainly sparking our attack,” Real Salt Lake general manager Elliot Fall said in a club statement. The RSL GM was also involved in the player’s original purchase and sale to Atlético Mineiro.

Savarino has “matured as a player” – Now most valuable Real Salt Lake player

“During his Brazilian experience over the last couple of years, Jefferson has matured as a player and as a person,” Fall added. “We expect him to provide even more danger as a playmaking and finishing option for RSL, and look forward to him combining with so many dangerous pieces on the roster.” The 25-year-old winger managed 21 goals and 21 assists in 93 games for the Galo and has steadily increased his market value to $8.8 million, which makes him the most valuable player on RSL’s squad and one of the 25 most valuable players in the league.
