Girondins Bordeaux are on the verge of being relegated to the French third division Championnat National due to financial reasons. The French control commission of the Ligue de Football Professionnel announced the decision on Tuesday. The decision was made after an audit of the club’s financial situation ahead of the new season.
The television station RMC reported that the former Ligue 1 club has an estimated debt of €40 million. According to various French media reports, Girondins can appeal the decision within one week—and that is the expected outcome. The club announced on Tuesday that they will appeal the “brutal” decision made against the club.
