Surpasses Alaba

Now it is official: EURO 2020 winner Gianluigi Donnarumma is joining Paris Saint-Germain after leaving youth club AC Milan. The 22-year-old has signed a contract running until 2026 with the French top club and is reported to have already completed the medical during the European Championship in Rome in June. With a market value of €60 million, the Italian international replaces David Alaba as the world’s most valuable free transfer. The Austrian, who moved from Bayern Munich to Real Madrid, had only set this record when his transfer was announced at the end of May.

For PSG, Donnarumma is already the third free transfer for the new season after Sergio Ramos from Real Madrid and Georginio Wijnaldum, who arrived from Liverpool. Together, the trio has a total market value of €105 million.

AC Milan to PSG

Donnarumma had played for Milan since 2013 and made 251 senior appearances, keeping a clean sheet 88 times. But now the ways parted, because the Rossoneri were not willing to accept the salary requests of agent Mino Raiola. The goalkeeper is said to have demanded wages of €12 million net a season for an extension. Two years ago, before the last extension of the younster, there had already been similar problems. Milan ultimately withdrew their offer and signed Lille’s title-winning keeper Mike Maignan instead at the end of May. PSG, however, met Raiola’s expectations.

PSG: Donnarumma to compete with “best in the world” Navas

In Paris, Donnarumma faces strong competition: Keylor Navas only extended his contract until 2024 in April. PSG president Nasser Ghanim Al-Khelaïfi called him the “best goalkeeper in the world” at the time.
