The Times reports
Unai Emery is on the verge of leaving Europa League winners and Champions League side Villarreal to join in relegation danger Newcastle United in the Premier League. The Times reported that Villarreal’s UCL group game against Young Boys will be Emery’s last in charge of the club—the Spaniards already have a replacement in mind.
Newcastle United will trigger Emery’s exit clause that will allow the 49-year-old to move for €6 million to England. The Spaniard will become the first head coach since the Magpies have been taken over by the new Saudi owners. The Saudi investment fund PIF holds 80% of the club’s shares.

Diario de Sevilla reported that Emery could be replaced by either Diego Martínez or Ernesto Valverde. The latter has been without a job since he was released by Barcelona in January 2020. Martínez recently opted against a new contract at Granada and is also available.
According to The Times, Emery and Newcastle United have negotiated since the start of October—now only final details are missing for the former PSG, Arsenal, and Sevilla coach to take over the Magpies in their away game against Brighton & Hove Albion on matchday 11. Emery is supposed to sign a three-year contract.
Emery’s tasks at Newcastle United: Relegation battle and transfer offensive
The Magpies are currently second to bottom in the Premier League standings and the gap to a non-relegation spot is six points. The relegation battle will be a new experience for Emery—it will be interesting to see how the coach navigates both the transfer offensive in January and the fight against the drop to the Championship at the same time.
