Diego Laxalt in talks with Toronto FC – Uruguayan wants to leave Russia

Dynamo Moscow left-back Diego Laxalt has drawn interest from Major League Soccer side Toronto FC sources have told Transfermarkt. The 29-year-old left-back is considered a potential candidate to fill the roster spot originally reserved for former Italian national team player Domenico Criscito. The 35-year-old had already agreed a deal with TFC earlier this season but withdrew from a potential transfer. 

Laxalt, who also has an offer from one more unnamed MLS team, however, is eager to leave Russia and move to Canada. Furthermore, his current salary of €1.6 million (around $1.7 million) is not considered an obstacle to a potential move as the Uruguayan is aware that Toronto can not sign him to a Designated Player (DP) contract. Russia’s invasion of Ukraine makes it unlikely that Toronto would have to pay a transfer fee.

Laxalt joined Dynamo Moscow from Milan in a deal worth $3.85 million at the start of the season and has featured in 16 games across all competition. The 24-times Uruguayan national team player joined Milan from Genoa in 2018 in a deal worth $20.9 million but could never fully establish himself at the club. Laxalt spent time on loan at Torino and Celtic before heading to Russia seeing his market value drop from $19.8 million to now $3.5 million.
