Contract expires

Borussia Dortmund midfielder Axel Witsel has drawn interest from Major League Soccer clubs. St. Louis City SC sporting director Lutz Pfannenstiel was the first to report the news during Friday’s Bundesliga match between Stuttgart and Dortmund (0-2). “Lots of rumors about him. Major League Soccer is one of the destinations that people are talking about, interesting to see what he decides,” Pfannenstiel said on the ESPN broadcast.

The statements caused a major steer on Friday, with the St. Louis City SC fanbase speculating that their club could be a possible destination. But Transfermarkt understands that the MLS expansion club is not currently pursuing a transfer. Instead, a source with knowledge of the situation indicated that the most likely destination at the moment appears to be Los Angeles, both LAFC, and LA Galaxy appear to be interested in the midfielder. But even though he is open to a move to North America, Transfermarkt understands Witsel has not made a decision about his future.

Witsel would be Dortmund’s second departure to MLS next summer. Backup goalkeeper Roman Bürki has already agreed terms with Pfannenstiel’s club St. Louis and will be headed to the US in July to play for MLS Next Pro side St. Louis City SC 2.
