“We have specific profiles for each position,” Bayer Leverkusen sporting director Simon Rolfes said to Forbes on Wednesday. “Then we check from the data. But we also use videos. Then we say: ‘Okay, which player could be interesting for us and what was their speed.’ But of course, you don’t need speed for each position, so we have a ranking area for each position, and then we check availability, and then we scout the player.” One player that has caught the eyes of Leverkusen scouts is Ecuadorian defender Piero Hincapié.
Update Aug. 16: Bayer Leverkusen have made the transfer official. “In Piero Hincapié we have signed a young, exciting defender and confident defender, who has already collected international experience,” Rolfes said. “Of course, we have scouted him for some time. His performances against world-class players at the Copa América stood out. We believe that Piero has a very promising future ahead of him.
Hincapié was one of the big winners of Copa América market value update. The 19-year-old Ecuadorian national team player saw his market value grow from €5 million to €8 million.
Update Aug. 16 22:00 CET: CA Talleres have published financial details of Hincapié’s transfer to Leverkusen. Bayer have paid $7.5 million upfront. The Argentine club will also receive 20% of any future transfer. Hincapié’s academy club Independiente del Valle will receive 35% of the initial fee.
