A real blockbuster trade is in the making. According to The Athletic, Lewis Morgan is about to move to the New York Red Bulls. The report says that both clubs have already agreed on a transfer fee of $1.2 million in Allocation Money. The deal makes Morgan the sixth most expensive signing in New York Red Bulls’ history.
Update December 12: The New York Red Bulls have officially confirmed the transfer of Lewis Morgan. “We are delighted to add Lewis as an attacking option,” head of sport Kevin Thelwell said. “Not only does he bring a wealth of experience from Europe, but he has found success in MLS the last two seasons. We hope that his experience within the league will provide an immediate impact to our group.”
The transfer comes as a huge surprise as Morgan was consistently one of the better players in his two seasons with Inter Miami. With a market value of $4.4m, Morgan was the second most valuable player on Miami’s squad.
Morgan trade to New York Red Bulls – Inter Miami CF had budget concerns
David Beckham‘s club is plagued by concerns over its budget. In May, Inter Miami was fined around $2.2 million for violations of salary budgets and roster regulations. This penalty was split between 2022 and 2023. By trading Morgan, Inter Miami free up $1.7 million ($1.2m allocation money plus $550,000 in salary). Enough to offset the club’s fine.
