Striker targets new record

Bayern Munich have confirmed a contract extension for Thomas Müller (32). By far the longest-serving member of the Munich squad, Müller will be tied to the record champions for two more years from this coming summer until 2024. Prior to his new deal being announced, the forward’s previous contract would have expired in 2023. The contract of goalkeeper Manuel Neuer (36) is also set to expire next summer, but an extension for the German shot-stopper is also expected soon.

“You can’t imagine Thomas Müller without Bayern – and Bayern without Thomas Müller,” said sporting director Hasan Salihamidzic. The player, who has been an integral part of the first team squad since 2009, emphasised: “The path we have shared since I switched to the FCB youth team in 2000 has been a fantastic success story so far.” Müller even celebrated his Bundesliga debut in Munich in 2008 with a photoshoot designed to look like his old childhood bedroom. The 2014 world champion is one of the top earners in the squad. In the current Bundesliga season, the native of Bavaria has risen to become the player with the most Bundesliga titles in German football.

Müller targets Bayern record – Just two players remain ahead of him

CEO Oliver Kahn explained: “Thomas Müller is a role model who carries our club’s coat of arms in his heart. Continuity has always characterised Bayern, so we are happy that we were able to extend the contract with this important player. He’s someone who takes the lead and he’s an important character in the dressing room with his style.”

Kahn is one of only two professionals in the history of Bayern who are ahead of Müller in terms of appearances. Currently with 624 games to his name, Müller could feasibly make his way to the top of the list in the coming seasons, where Sepp Maier is currently in first place with 670 games.
