Manchester United were one of the biggest spenders of 2023, splashing out nearly £200million across the two transfer windows.
The Red Devils finished the 2022/23 season strongly, winning the Carabao Cup, finishing third in the league and making it to the FA Cup final.
2023 has been a mixed year for Ten HagGetty
But the second half of the year has been a bit of a shambles, with the Red Devils out of the Cup, bottom of their Champions League group and not performing that well in the Premier League.
The recruitment has yet to work out, leaving Erik ten Hag in a difficult spot, but the money has been spent.
Here, talkSPORT.com looks at the five most expensive arrivals…
Altay Bayindir – £4.3million
Bayindir has joined United as the club’s backup goalkeeper to Andre Onana and is yet to make a first-team appearance.
However, unlike many of the league’s other reserve keepers, Bayindir is an experienced professional.
He’s a full Turkish international and made 145 appearances for Fenerbahce.
He’s also expected to finally get a first-team chance in the new year when Onana goes to the Africa Cup of Nations with Cameroon.
Bayindir could prove to be a bargainGettySofyan Amrabat – £8.5million
The Red Devils haven’t even permanently signed Amrabat, this is just the loan fee they’ve shelled out for the Moroccan international.
Should he impress in the remainder of his loan, United have a £21.4m option to buy inserted into the deal.
But Amrabat is yet to make a real impact at Old Trafford.
The midfielder has been deployed at left-back and used as a substitute in many games this year.
But there is still time for him to become a key starter for United.
Amrabat has yet to make a real impression at Man UnitedGettyAndre Onana – £47.2million
Onana was expected to be an upgrade on David de Gea due to the fact he’s great with the ball at his feet and was the best goalkeeper in the Champions League for Inter Milan last season.
However, while he is very good at passing out from the back, other parts of his game have left a lot to be desired, with several high-profile mistakes in the Champions League costing United.
In the Premier League, he’s been better and has prevented 3.7 goals, according to Opta’s data, which is better than any other goalkeeper in the league, bar Luton Town’s Thomas Kaminski.
If he can cut out the errors, Onana could prove to be one of the World’s best goalkeepers because he has all the attributes.
But as it stands, that looks a long way off, but the Africa Cup of Nations should give him a chance to regain some form.
Onana’s start at Man United has been disappointingGettyMason Mount – £55million
Mount’s arrival at Old Trafford was heralded as the start of a new era, but the midfielder has been plagued with injuries so far.
The England international can play in multiple positions and should bring quality and energy once he’s in the team.
Certainly, it’s too early to judge Mount due to the lack of game time, but United fans will hope to see the best of him soon.
Mount is still struggling to make an impactGettyRasmus Hojlund – £64million
Hojlund is a raw striker, who United have spent a lot of money on, but there are plenty of positive signs.
The Dane possesses explosive pace and the ability to beat a Man with his pure physicality.
But there are also many elements of his game that need work, and he’s yet to score in the Premier League, which will no doubt impact his confidence in time.
But in the Champions League, he has five goals, so he’s got the ability.
It’s early days, but Hojlund has the potential to be a special striker, he just needs some time.
