Gerrard the decisive factor

Aston Villa and FC Barcelona have announced a loan transfer of Philippe Coutinho. In the summer, the Premier League club has an option to buy, which both clubs also officially confirmed. The medical is still pending, as well as the work permit in England. As Barça announced in a statement, both clubs will share the salary of the 29-year-old for the duration of the loan.

Last negotiations took place on Friday morning, as The Athletic and Sport reported. In the Premier League, where he had experienced his best times at Liverpool and had recommended himself for a €135 million transfer to Barça in 2018, Coutinho meets head coach Steven Gerrard, with whom he had played for the Reds.

Steven Gerrard convinced FC Barcelona’s Coutinho of Aston Villa

Gerrard is said to be the decisive factor in the race to sign the Brazilian. He had said about previous rumours: “I can understand that because you’re talking about a world-class individual and player. He’s a wonderful footballer. To share a pitch with Coutinho was a great experience because he was on a level that few footballers are on. His imagination, his creation, and also some of the highlight reels are incredible. His name speaks for himself.”

Meanwhile, the deal also helps Barcelona. Once Coutinho is off the payroll, €55 million signing Ferran Torres could be registered to play in LaLiga immediately. For the Blaugrana, the most expensive winter transfer in the history of football played about 1,400 minutes in 30 matches since his return from Bayern Munich in 2020, in which he scored five goals. The €135 million euros he cost when he moved in January 2018 is the third highest transfer fee in football history – FC Barcelona are not only interested in Coutinho to leave in the winter, but also striker Luuk de Jong, who was loaned for a year from Sevilla, and Samuel Umtiti. The trio were among the market value losers in the latest LaLiga update.
