Four clubs interested

The January transfer window is often a stage for the most promising players in European football to flaunt their abilities and attract interest from some of the sport’s biggest clubs. And there’s little doubt that Borussia Dortmund striker Youssoufa Moukoko has demanded more column inches and occupied more back pages than most players of his age. Valued at €30 million, the 18-year-old striker has burst onto the scene in the Bundesliga and could now be looking to test his talent in another league before his first full season at Dortmund has even come to an end.

What is Moukoko’s contract situation at Dortmund?

Moukoko’s contract at Dortmund is currently set to expire at the end of the 2022/23 season, which means the player is currently able to consider offers from other clubs. Which has added an extra dimension to Dortmund’s attempts to sign the in-demand striker down to a new contract. According to reports in Germany, the Bundesliga side have been in negotiation with Moukoko and his agent since November, when the player turned 18.

The hold up over a new contract seems to come down to what each party believes Moukoko is worth. The 18-year-old talent has only played 58 competitive games for Dortmund, but the player is reportedly demanding much more than the club are willing to pay. According to Sport1, Dortmund’s latest offer stood at just over €3 million as a basic salary, plus bonuses. But the player and his agent are reportedly holding out for something closer to €5m, plus a potential release clause.

What clubs want to sign Moukoko?

Since breaking into Dortmund’s first team this season, Moukoko has attracted interest from a number of Europe’s biggest clubs. And the ferocity of such rumours has only intensified as we’ve entered the January transfer window.

To date, Moukoko has been heavily linked with a move to Manchester UnitedChelsea, Barcelona and Newcastle United. It seems unlikely that Man Utd or Barca will be willing to make a move for the player in January, but Chelsea’s gung-ho approach to the transfer window under new owner Todd Boehly could lead to the Stamford Bridge side swooping in for the Dortmund star. Alternatively, the Evening Standard in England have recently reported that Newcastle have made a “substantial verbal approach” for the young striker and could look to undercut Dortmund’s aforementioned contract proposal by offering the striker a deal that could earn him more than €8.8m per year.
