Real’s last chance for a fee

Raphaël Varane to Manchester United has been the subject of speculations for months. Reports now indicate that the Real Madrid defender could soon be on his way to England. According to a report by RMC Sport reporter Mohamed Bouhafsi, the Red Devils have agreed personal terms with the 28-year-old. Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has also tweeted that there has been contact between Man United and the Varane camp.

Real Madrid, in the meantime, have not received an offer. The English record champions are currently exploring whether Real is even interested in selling the defender this summer. Varane’s market value is €70 million, which makes him one of the most valuable center-backs in the world, and, as a result, the transfer fee will be enormous.

On the other hand, the contract of the French world champion expires in 2022—he is among the most valuable free agents next summer—and this summer could be the last chance for Real to receive a significant fee. That, in turn, would give Los Blancos the freedom to act on the transfer market in what has been difficult financial times due to COVID-19. But Real have already lost Sergio Ramos (to PSG) on a free transfer. David Alaba is expected to replace Ramos. On top of that Real have Éder Militão, Nacho Fernández and Jesús Vallejo under contract.

Manchester United interest in Varane goes back to José Mourinho era

United’s interest in Varane began three years ago when José Mourinho was still in charge. The Telegraph reported that the Red Devils were willing to pay €116 million for the defender. Now Varane’s contract is set to expire. But Man United have already conducted the biggest transfer of the summer, signing Jadon Sancho for €85 million from Borussia Dortmund—plus bonuses and add-ons.

Varane is not the only player at Real with an expiring contract next summer. Daniel Carvajal, Marcelo, Isco, and Karim Benzema are all going into their last contract year. The 79-times French national team player joined Real in 2011 for €10 million from RC Lens. Since then, he has played 360 games scoring 17 goals and seven assists.
