Possible trade?
Major League Soccer side Vancouver Whitecaps are in talks to sign Ayo Akinola. Sources with direct knowledge of the situation have told Transfermarkt that club representatives have talked with Akinola’s camp about potentially making the switch from Toronto FC to Vancouver. Akinola’s contract at TFC is set to expire at the end of December.
Another source with direct knowledge of the situation has confirmed that talks have been ongoing but that a transfer is not straightforward, as the Canadian national team player is not a free agent within MLS. Even though Akinola’s contract with Toronto FC is set to expire, the Reds will maintain his MLS rights if they make a bona fide contract offer (usually 105% of his current salary).
The Whitecaps, or any other MLS team, therefore, will have to reach a trade agreement with Toronto FC first before they can sign Akinola to a contract. But on the other hand, Toronto risk losing the player on a free transfer if Akinola moves to Europe. Turkish side Trabzonspor were interested in Akinola before he tore his ACL last summer at the Gold Cup. The striker is set to return from his injury this winter.

Akinola a Cavallini replacement?
Sources have told Transfermarkt that the Whitecaps are currently shopping Designated Player Lucas Cavallini. The Canadian striker has struggled ever since he was signed for a record deal from Puebla ahead of the 2020 season. With Cavallini potentially being moved, Akinola would be a logical replacement. The 21-year-old is currently valued at $5.5 million, which ranks him among the ten most valuable Canadian forwards on the planet.
