Tajon Buchanan joins Club Brugge – New England Revolution to receive record fee

Deal almost complete

Freiburg, Augsburg, Brugge? Many clubs have been linked to Canadian national team star Tajon Buchanan. The truth is, all three clubs were in the running to sign the 22-year-old New England Revolution star, but Transfermarkt can confirm various media reports that Jupiler Pro League team Club Brugge have won the race. Buchanan is expected to finish the MLS season with the Revolution before completing the transfer in the winter.

Overall, it is a deal of significant magnitude. Transfermarkt can confirm a report by well-connected MLSSoccer.com writer Tom Bogert that the initial fee will be around $7 million. The deal also includes $3 million in bonuses and a 10% sell-on clause. The initial fee on its own makes it a record deal for the New England Revolution—Buchanan breaking a record that has been held by Clint Dempsey since the 2006/07 season when he joined Fulham for $3.3 million.

For Brugge, Buchanan is also a significant investment. Only two players were more expensive, David Okereke (from Spezia Calcio for $8.98m) and Simon Mignolet (from Liverpool for $7.7m), were more expensive.

Gold Cup star and 4th most expensive Canadian – Buchanan justifies market value

Buchanan’s transfer is also a significant deal in Canadian soccer history. The 22-year-old becomes the fourth most expensive Canadian in history behind Jonathan David, Alphonso Davies, and Tomasz Radzinski (check out the full list here). But overall, the deal justifies Buchanan’s market value development. A star at the Gold Cup and a key player for the New England Revolution, the winger has seen his market value rise to $7.7 million, which makes him the fourth most valuable Canadian on the planet
