Offer from Leverkusen

Mykhaylo Mudryk is optimistic that a transfer from Shakhtar Donetsk to Bundesliga club Bayer Leverkusen can be completed. The left-winger confirmed as much in an interview with Sportarena on the weekend. “I am a Shakhtar player but I would be very happy if my club accepts Bayer’s offer,” Mudryk said. I have decided for myself that that is the only club I want to join.” A transfer to Premier League club Brentford is not an option for the 21-year-old Ukrainian.

Mudryk made his debut in 2018 but was loaned out by Shakhtar to Arsenal Kyiv and Desna Chernigiv before becoming a permanent member of the Miners in January 2021. Brentford are also interested in signing the Ukrainian national team player and Sport1 have reported that the English club has offered around €20 million.

“I know of the offer but by all due respect: I will definitely not go to Brentford,” Mudryk said. “That is a middle-class Premier League club, that doesn’t play in Europe and for me, the most important thing is to play in the Champions League.” Mudryk played all six group stage games for Shakhtar in the UCL this season and a transfer to Leverkusen would give him the chance to add to the experience. “We thanked Brentford for their offer but we stepped away from negotiations.”

Mudryk’s contract at Shakhtar will run until the end of 2026. Should Leverkusen and Shakthar agree on a transfer, Mudryk would become the third Ukrainian after Andriy Voronin and Vladlen Yurchenko in the club’s history. “The German Bundesliga, a young and ambitious team, a strong coach, the Champions League, and a new challenge. If it doesn’t work out then I will stay at Shakhtar.” Leverkusen already have left-wingers Moussa Diaby and Paulinho under contract. Both have been linked with transfers but sporting director Simon Rolfes said when asked about Diaby on Saturday that he is optimistic that the Frenchman will stay.
