Sevilla buy Corona from Porto – Fee €9m less than offered in 2021

Last summer, Sevilla FC failed in their bid to sign Jesús Corona from Porto as the €12 million offered were too little for the 29-times Portuguese champions. According to Marca, six months later, the fee has dropped to just €3 million—the LaLiga side officially confirmed the transfer on Friday. Corona, who was introduced as Tecatitio and is now also listed under that name in the TM database, signed a contract until 2025. His contract at Porto would have expired in the summer.

This season Corona, who since his arrival from Twente Enschede in 2015 has played at least 27 games in the league every season, struggled for playing time at Porto. The right-winger managed just 11 appearances and 378 minutes in playing time with just one assist to his name. That also had an impact on his market value. The 29-year-old—with the exception of the 2020 COVID cut—received his first market value downgrade from €30 million to €22 million since joining Porto. 

“His contract expires in the summer, and he has rejected offers by Porto to renew his deal to leave the club on a free transfer in the summer,” TM Area Manager Portugal Marcel De Almeida said in December as part of the Portugal market value update. “For Porto, it is the same scenario as Felipe, Herrera, Brahimi, and Marega. As a punishment, the club is now sitting him for most games. In the few games Corona has featured, the Mexican appeared demotivated, far removed from the excellent performances that made him the best player in the league over the last few years.”

But instead of a free transfer in the summer, Sevilla secured the player now for a small fee. The Spanish paper Marca reported previously that Porto were willing to listen to offers significantly below his market value to avoid a free transfer. As a result, Sevilla were able to secure the player now.
