Report

Barcelona are set to lose Sergio Busquets on a free transfer next summer. Sport reported on Wednesday morning that the 34-year-old has told the club that he will not renew his contract and that Busquets wants to join Major League Soccer club Inter Miami CF. According to the report, Busquets has rejected a one-year contract extension by the Catalans.

Sport further reported that Inter Miami wanted to sign Busquets at the start of the 2022 season, but Busquets opted to sign a contract extension with Barça instead. Busquets has an option to renew his contract by one more season at the end of 2023, but after visiting Florida on Barcelona’s US tour this summer has now decided that he wants to make the move to MLS.

Despite being sanctioned for Salary Cap violations in 2021, Inter Miami have the space to sign the Spanish national team player (137 games) to a Designated Player contract. At the moment, the Beckham-owned club has two DP players listed, Gonzalo Higuaín and Rodolfo Pizarro. Pizarro is currently on loan at Monterrey but counts against the cap as Inter Miami did not receive a fee; his future is up and the air. The same can be said about Higuaín, whose contract expires at the end of this season.

Higuaín & Pizarro off the books in 2023 – Busquets could complete restructuring

Although Pizarro’s future is still in doubt—the Mexican could return in 2023—Inter Miami CF are now in a good position under sporting director Chris Henderson and head coach Phil Neville to finally shape the roster to their liking. Busquets, who with a market value of €9m would be the most valuable player at Inter Miami and also among the 25 most valuable MLS players, would most certainly be a major addition to the club.
