Tyrell Malacia will be ruled out until next year after suffering a setback in his recovery from injury.

The Manchester United full-back underwent surgery for a knee problem over the summer but has endured a rocky road back to fitness.

Malacia was hoping to return as early as November, however a statement on Man United’s website has confirmed the setback.

It wrote: “Tyrell Malacia is on course to return to action early next year as he recovers from a knee injury.

“The Netherlands left-back has not played so far this season following an operation over the summer.

“Unfortunately, he suffered a setback during his rehabilitation, which required further surgery.

“This has been successfully completed and Malacia is now back at Carrington working hard to be fit early in the New Year.”

As a result, Sergio Reguilon could be set for an extended stay at Old Trafford.

The Spanish defender joined on a season-long loan from Tottenham – an agreement that includes a break clause that comes into effect in January.

That option could have been triggered had Malacia completed his return to action, however the setback suffered by the defender means that the Tottenham left-back could be kept around.

Malacia joined Man United in the summer of 2022, joining from Feyenoord as Erik ten Hag‘s first signing at the club.
