MLS Cup winning coach
MLS Cup champions New York City FC have confirmed on Monday the departure of their hugely successful head coach Ronny Deila. Deila will leave the club immediately and join Belgian side Standard Liège. Nick Cushing will become the new interim head coach while the club is scouting the market for a more permanent replacement.
“Everyone at the Club would like to thank Ronny for the fantastic job he has done here,” NYCFC sporting director David Lee said in a club statement. “With Ronny at the helm, we have developed an even stronger culture of winning and togetherness and have accomplished our number-one goal of bringing silverware to this Club, to this City, and to our fans. “We know this was not a decision Ronny took lightly, but we understand his desire to return to Europe and be closer to home. He has been a true leader since joining the Club and we wish him well for the next challenge in his career.”
Deila took over NYCFC in January 2020 and has averaged 1.7 points per game in 90 games with the club. The 46-year-old also guided NYCFC to an MLS Cup title, delivering the first professional championship for any New York-based team in over a decade.
