Highest income since Ronaldo
What was already more or less certain since July 27 has now been finalised: Raphaël Varane joins Manchester United from Real Madrid. After completing quarantine, the 28-year-old underwent a medical on Tuesday evening and subsequently signed a contract until 2025. A year before the end of his deal in Spain, Real will receive an initial fee of €40 million plus €10 million in possible add-ons for the centre-back, who made 360 appearances for Los Blancos, according to the BBC.
The initial fee alone puts Varane in eighth place among the most expensive sales of Real Madrid, who have not received that much money for a single player since the €117 million departure of Cristiano Ronaldo to Juventus in 2018. If all bonuses are paid, Varane would even move up to fourth place – ahead of Mesut Özil, who left for Arsenal for €47 million in 2013.
