Chelsea among losers as well
Transfermarkt.co.uk has reassessed 94 Premier League players in an intermediary update. A considerable quintet at Chelsea around record signing Romelu Lukaku and Timo Werner thereby significantly drop in market value – likewise five Manchester United stars including Jadon Sancho and Marcus Rashford go down. The Red Devils also provide the player who is upgraded the most.
In both absolute and relative market value plus, youngster Anthony Elanga is at the top of the ranking in the update. An €11 million upgrade represents 275% growth and a new valuation of €15 million, meaning the United talent is now listed as one of four teenagers in the league worth double-digit millions. “Since the turn of the year, the Swede has become a permanent part of United’s rotation,” Daniel Busch, Area Manager Transfermarkt.co.uk said, explaining Elanga’s rise. “Partially preferred to players like Sancho and Rashford, his debut for the Swedish senior team followed during the current international break. In addition to his strong acceleration and pace, he can finish with both feet.”
Pogba & Co. – The most valuable Premier League players
While Elanga’s plus is rather an exception among the eight revalued players of the record titleholders – only Diogo Dalot (+€6 million to €18 million) is also upgraded – there is also only one footballer with positive market value development at local rivals Manchester City: Phil Foden goes up by €5 million to €90 million – the sixth increase for the 21-year-old in the last two years, making Foden the second most valuable Englishman in football behind striker Harry Kane. Area Manager Busch explained: “Foden is getting more and more playing time under head coach Pep Guardiola and looks very mature for his age. His patience has paid off. Versatile on the pitch, he has now increased his market value by €67 million within the past two years.”
Leeds and Phillips earn biggest upgrades – Lukaku, Sancho & Co. down
In terms of squad values, Chelsea and Man United are the clubs with the biggest losses in the update. At the Blues this is mainly down to the devaluations of Lukaku (-€15 million) and Werner (-€8 million euros). “Werner still isn’t a regular starter for Chelsea and often falls victim to Tuchel’s rotation,” Busch said about the Germany international, who has only recorded two goal contributions in the current Premier League season. The new market value of the former Leipzig forward: €42 million. Meanwhile, Lukaku, who was signed from Inter Milan for €113 million in the summer but was recently only used as a substitute, is also valued at only €85 million now. Busch explained: “In addition to mixed performances, character deficits have been a topic at the club since his interview with Sky Italia.”
The biggest market value losers in the Premier League (March 2022)
At United, in addition to the biggest loser, Rashford – down by €15 million to €70 million – and defensive record signing Harry Maguire (-€8 million to €40 million), former Borussia Dortmund winger Sancho stands out. “Despite a recent rise in form and some goal involvements, Sancho still has to get used to the Premier League and is not a permanent member of the national team either,” Busch said. Consequently, Sancho is slightly devalued, by €5 million to €80 million, although it can be considered a minus on probation. Busch continued: “Due to his age and potential, however, another revaluation in the near future is not unlikely.”
Leeds, on the other hand, have four revalued players, all of whom have been upgraded. A squad plus of €23 million is accounted for by youngster Joe Gelhardt (+€2 million to €5 million), Raphinha (+€5 million to €45 million), who has been linked with a move to FC Barcelona or Bayern Munich, defensive starter Pascal Struijk (+€6 million to €15 million) and, above all, Kalvin Phillips, for whom, according to Busch, “the market signals clearly speak for a significant upgrade, which could be even higher in the event of a transfer in the summer. Firmly integrated into the England team, the Leeds-born 26-year-old could soon become the lynchpin of a top team and bring a record transfer fee to the Whites 20 years after the departure of Rio Ferdinand.” With a plus of €10 million, Phillips recorded the second highest absolute plus of the update and is now valued at €50 million.
Arsenal youngsters on the up – Toney rewarded for quick adaption
While Bernd Leno, who is only second choice at Arsenal, is downgraded (-€6 million to €10 million), youngsters Gabriel Martinelli (+€10 million to €38 million) and Emile Smith Rowe (+€2 million to €40 million) are on the up. The same applies to Brentford striker Ivan Toney, who adapted to the Premier League quickly and rises by €3 million to now €35 million, and Wolves defender Max Kilman (+€7 million to €16 million), who has been linked with a move to a bigger club in the past few months.

United forward Mason Greenwood and Man City’s Benjamin Mendy are currently not training with their respective teams, court proceedings are underway against them – until these are concluded, Transfermarkt has decided to set their market values to €0. Gylfi Sigurdsson has not been part of the Everton squad as well since the summer and will be treated in the same way.
