“We have specific profiles for each position,” Bayer Leverkusen sporting director Simon Rolfes said to Forbes on Wednesday. “Then we check from the data. But we also use videos. Then we say: ‘Okay, which player could be interesting for us and what was their speed.’ But of course, you don’t need speed for each position, so we have a ranking area for each position, and then we check availability, and then we scout the player.” One player that has caught the eyes of Leverkusen scouts is Ecuadorian defender Piero Hincapié.
Hincapié was one of the big winners of Copa América market value update. The 19-year-old Ecuadorian national team player saw his market value grow from €5 million to €8 million. Not surprisingly, the defender has caught the attention of several European clubs and Transfermarkt can now confirm a report by César Luis Merlo that Hincapié is on the verge of joining Die Werkself.
Sources with direct knowledge of the situation have told Transfermarkt that in principle a deal has been agreed with Hincapié’s Argentine club CA Talleres. Hincapié is currently on special leave but has not yet completed all his paperwork or a medical. Both still need to be completed for the 19-year-old to make his move to Germany. Once at Bayer, Hincapié is expected to sign a five-year contract. Leverkusen are expected to pay in the region of €8 million for center-back.
