For family reasons
Two and a half years after his move to Atlético, Kieran Trippier is back in England. The 31-year-old was presented as the first new signing since the takeover of the Saudi investment fund “Public Investment Fund” (PIF) on Thursday. The right-back signs a contract running until 2024 and costs a fee of around €15 million, according to Sky Sports.

According to Spanish media reports, Trippier is returning to England “for family reasons”. Atlético had tried to persuade the 35-time international to stay without success – his deal in Spain ran until 2023. Trippier had felt comfortable in Madrid and also knew that the Spanish club was more competitive than Newcastle. However, it was problematic that his wife and two children live in England and he did not want to be away from the family any longer after two and a half years.
Trippier said: “I’m delighted to be joining this fantastic club. I really enjoyed my time in Madrid, but when I became aware of interest from Newcastle United, and having worked with Eddie Howe before, I knew this was where I wanted to be. I’m aware there is a lot of work ahead of us but I know the demands of Premier League well and I know what an amazing club this is with very talented players. I can’t wait to get started and I’m excited to step out at St. James’ Park as a Newcastle player.”
