All games Sunday

On Sunday, Major League Soccer will wrap up the regular season. With the exception of Houston Dynamo, who have been eliminated from the MLS Cup Playoffs already all clubs will be in action on Sunday. All 14 Eastern Conference teams will be in action and kick-off will be at the same time for all games (3:30 p.m ET). All Western Conference teams, minus Houston, will then play at 6 p.m Eastern (check out the full schedule here).

“Altogether 11 teams are still fighting for a spot in the playoffs,” Junior North America Area Manager Dominic Becker said. “There could be a few surprises still. Teams like Atlanta United and the LA Galaxy could miss the playoffs for the second time in a row. The Vancouver Whitecaps could be back for the first time since 2017. It should be a very interesting Decision Day.”

Only one thing is for certain at this point. New England Revolution with Canadian star Tajon Buchanan will enter the post-season in first place overall. The Revs have won the Supporters’ Shield and will finish the season with at least 73 points, a new regular-season record. Below them, last year’s Supporters’ Shield winners Philadelphia Union, Nashville SC, where Hany Mukhtar has been a standout with 15 goals and ten assists, and New York City FC have also qualified but are still vying for places.

Eastern Conference: Three spots for six teams

Atlanta United, Orlando City, New York Red Bulls, CF Montréal, D.C. United and last year’s champions Columbus Crew are the six teams fighting for the last three playoff spots. Atlanta are in the most secure position and could still secure home advantage and only need a point against last-placed FC Cincinnati to secure a spot in the post-season. Montréal will host in a winner-take-all-matchup. Montréal have to win, Orlando will be through with a draw. The two players to watch in that game will be Djordje Mihailovic (15 assists) and Daryl Dike (9 goals since his return from Barnsley). The New York Red Bulls need just one point against Nashville. Columbus and D.C. United only have outside chances as they have to hope that results elsewhere go their way.

In terms of seeding, both Philadelphia and Nashville have secured a home round one game as they are guaranteed to finish in the top four. Both Atlanta United and Orlando City still have a chance to finish in the top four should they win their respective games. NYCFC can still finish second with a win if both the Union and Nashville lose.

Western Conference: Everything to play for

Things are a bit more complicated in the Western Conference. Five teams are fighting for three playoff spots. Minnesota United, Vancouver, the Galaxy, Real Salt Lake, and Los Angeles FC could still make it. LAFC need both a win and results elsewhere to go in their way. The Whitecaps, led by Ryan Gauld and Brian White are in the best position, they only need a draw to qualify and, should results elsewhere go their way, could even afford to lose their final game against the Seattle Sounders

The Sounders, in the meantime, are one of three teams that could still finish first in the Western Conference adding even further edge to what should be an exciting Cascadia Derby clash at B.C. Place on Sunday. The Sounders need a win to clinch the top spot ahead of Sporting Kansas City and the  Colorado Rapids. But a draw or defeat could be enough should Sporting KC and Colorado lose their respective games against playoff hopefuls Real Salt Lake and LAFC, respectively.
