Market values France: PSG signing Hakimi top winner – U21 talents around Cho on the up

146 Ligue 1 updates

Transfermarkt.fr has updated the market values of 146 Ligue 1 players, but Lionel Messi is not yet included this time – TM will wait until the complete update in the winter to re-evaluate the new PSG star. Among the biggest winners are numerous U21 talents who are about to take the “next step” and France’s most expensive summer transfer: Achraf Hakimi. Former Liverpool winger Xherdan Shaqiri and Argentinian striker Mauro Icardi are among the losers this time.

Paris Saint-Germain transferred €60 million to Inter Milan for versatile right-back Hakimi and the Moroccan repaid that trust with strong performances. Ronan Caroff, Area Manager France, says: “His adaptation to PSG and Ligue 1 happened in the blink of an eye and Hakimi has given PSG what Florenzi, Dagba and sometimes Kehrer have lacked on the right wing. If Paris’ season continues to be this successful, it will also be because of Hakimi.”

For the 22-year-old, there is an upgrade of €10 million to €70 million – making him one of the five most valuable players in Ligue 1 and one of the three most valuable full-backs in the world.

Such a significant upgrade is only received by Pape Sarr of FC Metz, who at 19 excels in defensive midfield. The Senegalese, who only moved to Metz from his homeland in 2020, was signed by Tottenham for €16 million last summer and loaned straight back for a season. “Sarr’s new market value of €20 million is linked to the transfer fee, which can easily exceed this sum thanks to bonus payments. But he is also revealing his talent more and more on the pitch – for Metz and for Senegal,” Caroff says.

Sarr thus joins a group of talented players up to the age of 21 who will be updated by several millions – including Monaco duo Aurélien Tchouaméni (+5 to €35 million) and Sofiane Diop (+4 to €20 million), Nice’s Amine Gouiri (+5 to €35 million), RennesLoïc Badé (+5 to €17 million) and Kamaldeen Sulemana (+6 to €15 million), Clermont striker Mohamed Bayo (+4 to €10 million) and 17-year-old Mohamed-Ali Cho of SCO Angers.

Cho on the up – Downgrades for Shaqiri, Icardi, Aouar and Bernat

Attacking all-rounder Cho, who moved from PSG to Everton at the age of eleven in 2015, returned to France in January 2020 and signed for Angers. He made regular appearances as a substitute at 16 during the 2020/21 season and is now a regular in the current campaign. “He has played a big part in the great start of his club, where he is only under contract until 2023, with his two goals. There are no rumours about his future yet, but they will undoubtedly come soon. At 17, Cho is already part of France’s U21s and the only player born in 2004 – the Équipe Tricolore’s next youngest talents were born in 2002.”

Houssem Aouar last played for the U21s at Euro 2021 shortly before his 23rd birthday, and he made his first and, so far, last appearance for France’s senior side a year ago. Since then, his market value curve shows a downward trend and also in the course of this update there is a minus of €7 million to €35 million. “Despite all the rumours last summer, he still has not left Lyon. They had a poor start to the season and Aouar has the talent to lead the team, but so far that has not been the case – unlike Paqueta, who is playing more efficiently and to whose market value level he has now been downgraded,” Caroff says, explaining the minus.

Other players from Lyon, who sit tenth in the table, also saw their market value drop: Rayan Cherki (-4 to €23 million), Jeff Reine-Adélaïde (-2 to €20 million) and Shaqiri (-2 to €10 million) are among the biggest losers. Apart from the big plus for Hakimi, there are only devaluations at PSG. These include Icardi (-5 to €35 million), Danilo Pereira (-4 to €16 million) and Juan Bernat (-3 to €16 million).

How Transfermarkt market values work

The Transfermarkt market values are calculated taking into account various pricing models. A major factor is the Transfermarkt community, whose members discuss and evaluate player market values in detail. In general, the Transfermarkt market values are not to be equated with transfer fees.

The goal is not to predict a price but an expected value of a player in a free market. Both individual transfer modalities and situational conditions are relevant in determining market values. Examples of this are listed below. Transfermarkt does not use an algorithm (you can find the detailed market value definition here).
