Super League Update

With the end of the season, Transfermarkt has updated the market values of the Chinese Super League. Ahead of the championship playoffs, Oscar has once again increased the gap at the very top of the market value standings. The 29-year-old playmaker saw his market value grow for the first time in two years—by €2 million to now €18 million.

“After many players left China because of the salary cap, fans can still enjoy the quality of this top player,” TM data scout Asaikana said. “Oscar had three goals and nine assists, the most in the league. Even with Hulk and Marko Arnautovic gone, Oscar managed to guide Shanghai Port to several victories and a shared first place with Changchun Yatai.”

Oscar increased his lead at the top of the most valuable CSL players, especially as the only other player with a market value of more than €10 million, Cédric Bakambu, saw his value drop significantly—by €3 million to now €12 million. The Beijing Guoan forward is 30 years old and is expected to leave the club on a free transfer. Fenerbahçe are interested.

Market values: Fellaini, Quintero, and Mooy drop – Guo on the up

Other players that saw their market value drop are also players with a past in Europe. The list includes Oscar’s Australian teammate Aaron Mooy (-€1m to €7.5m), Colombian playmaker Juan Fernando Quintero (-€1m to €6m) from Shenzhen FC, and also former Man United star Marouane Fellaini (-€0.2m to €4.8m) from Shandong Taishan.

There have also been a few winners, like the South Korean Jun-ho Son, who plays for Shandong. The 29-year-old midfielder was described as one of the best players in the Super League by China expert Asaikana. He is one of the reasons why his team is leading their division. Son was able to double his market value to now €3 million.

With many stars having left China, Chinese players were given a bigger platform to play themselves into the spotlight. One such example is Son’s and Fellaini’s teammate, Tianyu Guo. The 22-year-old forward saw his market value grow by €300,000 to €900,000, he is now one of the ten most valuable Chinese players in the world. The forward scored eight goals in 14 games for Shandong Taishan—only three players were more successful: Fellaini (nine), Júnior Negrão (11), and Elkeson (11).
