Costs €32m more than Sancho

The new record transfer of the summer is done. Jack Grealish is leaving Aston Villa to join Manchester City on a contract running until 2027. According to The Athletic, the Citizens pay £100 million, the equivalent of about €117.5 million, for the 25-year-old, who thus breaks several records. Grealish now is the most expensive English player in history, ahead of Harry Maguire (for €87 million from Leicester to Man United in 2019) and Jadon Sancho (for €85 million from BVB to Man United in 2021).

In addition, the England international replaces Paul Pogba, who had moved from Juventus to Man United for €105 million in 2016, as the most expensive signing in the Premier League. Internationally, Grealish ranks seventh among the most expensive transfers in history and is only the eleventh footballer to earn his former club a fee of over €100 million.

The high amount results from the fact that Aston Villa were not financially dependent on a sale and the status that Grealish has as an England international. Only last September, the winger had extended his contract with his youth club, which he had led to promotion in 2019, until 2025.

Man City sign Grealish – Buendía and Bailey join Aston Villa

In the past two seasons, Grealish totalled 14 goals and 18 assists in 62 matches. Even during the Covid-19 crisis, clubs in the Premier League can invest huge amounts of money and sometimes have to pay above market value for footballers from their own country. This summer’s transfer window clearly shows why the top Spanish and Italian clubs were particularly interested in creating a more profitable Super League.

Grealish’s former club had already anticipated a departure of their captain in a certain way. In Leon Bailey and Emiliano Buendía two versatile attacking players arrived for a combined €70 million. Thanks to Grealish, Aston Villa’s summer transfer balance is still positive.
