International football beckons

Manchester United interim manager Ralf Rangnick has confirmed that he will become the new manager of the Austrian national team at the end of the season, when his current contract with the Premier League side expires. Rangnick was brought in as a temporary replacement to former Man Utd manager Ole Gunnar Solskjær in November of last year, with the intention of moving into a consultancy role for the club next season. The German manager has confirmed that he will still fulfil this role even after accepting the Austria job.

After weeks of speculation over his future at Man Utd, following a number of poor performances, Rangnick confirmed that he had accepted an offer to become the next Austria manager. “I will take over as national team manager of Austria at the end of the season but will continue my consultancy with Manchester United,” said Rangnick. “I’m really looking forward to playing my part in helping United become a real force again.” In a short statement on the Austrian FA website, Rangnick added: “It’s an honour for me to take on the role of team boss. I’m particularly excited about the prospect of contesting the European Championships in Germany with a young team hungry for success.”

Rangnick’s record at Man Utd

Although Rangnick was announced as an exciting appointment by the club in November, his time at Old Trafford has undoubtedly been nothing short of a struggle since day one. To date, the German tactician has overseen 25 games at the Premier League side, but has only picked up 10 wins and eight draws. And along the way the side have been defeated seven times. As such, Man Utd have been knocked out of the Champions League, FA Cup and now look unlikely to finish in the top four of the Premier League under Rangnick’s tenure as interim manager. Which is why the club announced the appointment of Erik ten Hag in late April, as the new full-time manager for next season.
