Offer rejected!
Another day, another reported failed Manchester United transfer. On Wednesday, Spanish outlets AS and Marca reported that the Red Devils have seen a €130-135 million club record bid for Atlético Madrid midfielder João Félix rejected. Man United are also understood to have Atleti forward Matheus Cunha on their list as manager Erik ten Hag is desperate to improve a side that has recently been demolished 4-0 by Brentford.
João Félix, in many ways, would be a logical addition for United. The Portuguese playmaker can operate in a 4-3-3 as a classic no.10 and also partly fulfill the role Ten Hag had envisioned for Frenkie de Jong, who is adamant that he wants to remain at Barcelona and not join Man United this window. Félix can, however, also play further up the pitch where he could have been a natural replacement for Cristiano Ronaldo. In other words, an ideal signing for United.
Signing new players, however, has been a tricky endeavor for United, and Italian transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has reported that Atleti have now turned down offers for both Cunha and Félix. Romano added that Atlético Madrid have sent a clear hands-off warning to United.

João Félix: Would have been among the 3 most expensive players in history
At the same time, the João Félix bid, if successful, would have been history. The 22-year-old joined Atlético Madrid for €127.2 million from Benfica in 2019. A fee in the region of €130 million would have meant that only two players—Romelu Lukaku and Neymar—would have been more expensive throughout their careers (overview). For now, the standings of the most expensive footballers in history remain unchanged, perhaps until United are finally successful with a bid.
