This week saw the publication of the latest Transfermarkt market value update for the Premier League and it was once again bad news for Manchester United. While Erik ten Hag’s side may be improving on the pitch, his team saw a 5% drop in overall squad market value, losing just under €40 million since the previous update a few months ago.
However, while there were minimal dips for the likes of Marcus Rashford, Scott McTominay and Raphaël Varane, the biggest news and perhaps the club’s most notable concern was a €15m decrease in market value for Jadon Sancho, who is now worth just €60m at the Old Trafford club. And saw the biggest drop in market value across the entire English top-flight.

Not only is the England international’s new value notably less than the €85m Man Utd paid for the player last summer, but it’s also considerably lower than his highest point at Borussia Dortmund in March 2020, when he was worth a remarkable €130m. And few would argue that such a drop for the player isn’t entirely warranted considering his misfortunes on the pitch since returning to English football.

After making the move to Man Utd amidst a huge amount of buzz and attention, Sancho has never really managed to live up to the hype simply because he hasn’t been able to play like the player he once was in the Bundesliga. At Dortmund, Sancho bagged 0.45 goals and 0.58 assists per 90 minutes. And, to no great surprise, such performances elevated him to the status of one of Europe’s most promising players.
However, when the young winger made the move to England his role on the pitch quickly changed from being the attacker-in-chief to suddenly having to make runs and finish moves created by other playmakers in the team, most notably Bruno Fernandes. As such, while Sancho has still managed to show plenty of composure in front of goal, he’s only managed four assists in 52 appearances for the club.

The player has also significantly struggled with a lack of proper game time at Man Utd. Since making the move to Old Trafford, Sancho has only started five leagues in a row for the club on three occasions and often found himself benched or out with an injury just when he was getting into the rhythm of things. Naturally, much of that is down to the fact that he’s now playing under his third head coach since making the move to the club a little over a year ago.
