After 16 years in Europe

Luis Suárez could be heading to Major League Soccer. According to CBS reporter Klaus German, a transfer of the 35-year-old striker to the North American soccer league is in the offing. ESPN’s Taylor Twellman brings Los Angeles FC, who have already signed Gareth Bale and Giorgio Chiellini earlier this month, into play. Suárez, who is one of the most valuable free agents, is apparently turning down a return to his youth club Club Nacional in return.

The forward recently confirmed in an interview with radio station Sport 890 that he had “five or six” offers from MLS after his contract with Atlético expired. He has been linked with D.C. United, now coached by former Man United legend Wayne Rooney, among others. “The market in MLS is very complex,” Suárez said. “Some clubs want you but don’t have any open spots, so it would have to be in January. Other clubs want you now, but I have to weigh up whether they have a chance of qualifying for the play-offs.” The regular season ends at the beginning of October. LAFC currently lead the Western Conference with 45 points after 21 games played.

According to Uruguayan journalist Martin Charquero, Suárez is turning down a transfer to former club Club Nacional in exchange for a move to the US. The veteran reportedly had decided to return to Montevideo on Friday before an opportunity opened up for him to head to MLS. In recent weeks, Suárez had expressed surprise that there had been no contact between him and Club Nacional earlier.

After 16 years in Europe: Suárez about to move to the MLS?

Suárez left the club where he made his first professional steps for Europe in 2006. There, he first played for Groningen before moving on to Ajax, Liverpool, Barcelona and Atlético. At Barça, he reached a career-high market value of €90 million in 2015. Originally, there were speculations that Suárez would continue his career in Europe after the end of his contract with the Colchoneros. Now, in all likelihood, the attacker is heading back to America after all, albeit to the north rather than the south.
