Lowest market value since 2019 – Out-of-form Cantwell faces a pivotal season at Norwich

Value almost halved in one year 

The English Championship is known for being one of the most unforgiving leagues in all of European football. The second tier can make heroes of future stars, but it more often than not plays host to the crumbling careers of players that have all but given up hope of thriving in the Premier League. This season’s Championship is no exception. As the most recent Transfermarkt market value update for the division highlights, there are a number of once-promising players that now find themselves back in the Championship and in desperate need of inspiration to get their careers back on track. And perhaps none more so than Norwich playmaker Todd Cantwell. 

In his debut season in the English top-flight in 2019/20, in which the midfielder bagged six goals and two assists in 37 games, Cantwell’s stock was undoubtedly on the rise. Considered by many to be an England international in the making, the midfielder’s market value shot up to €20 million, as the likes of Leicester City, Leeds United and even Liverpool were linked with a move for the player. Relegation back to the Championship followed in the following season, which Cantwell seemed to handle relatively well. Over the course of 33 league games, the midfielder bagged six goals and seven assists, as his side once again bounced back to win promotion back to the Premier League. It was here that the player hit a career-high market value of €22m. 

However, that’s when the problems started. A dismal start to the campaign was followed by reports that Cantwell was missing training sessions and had fallen out with manager Daniel Farke. Which, ultimately, led to the midfielder being omitted entirely from the matchday squad for six consecutive matchdays. And despite Farke being replaced by Dean Smith, Cantwell still struggled for game time, before being loaned out to Bournemouth in the January window, where he also struggled to make much of an impression. At this point, the player’s market value was beginning to fall and by the end of the season it stood at just €18m. 

Which brings us to the present day, where Cantwell now finds himself back at a club that he has already shown a desire to leave. And with his current deal set to expire in the summer of 2023, it’s unlikely that the midfielder will be extending his stay at Carrow Road into next season. Now at 24 years of age, the midfielder now has one remaining season at the club to prove that he can once again help Norwich get back into the Premier League. And only then could we see his market value start creeping upwards once again. But unless something does change soon, the player’s current market value of €12m will continue its worrying and steady demise.
