Haaland 11th
Lionel Messi has won his seventh Ballon d”Or since 2009. On Monday night, the 34-year-old Argentine Paris Saint-Germain forward received the trophy, awarded by the French magazine France Football at the Parisian Theatre du Chatelet. Messi finished ahead of Bayern Munich‘s Robert Lewandowski, who received the award for the best forward in 2021, and European Championship winner Jorginho (Chelsea). Dortmund’s Erling Haaland ranked 11th.
Lewandowski was also the favorite in 2020, but the award was canceled due to the COVID pandemic. Messi won in 2019 and then guided Argentina to their first Copa América victory in 28 years this last summer.

Despite another record year, the 2020 treble winner with Bayern Munich missed out on the trophy once again. In the Bundesliga, Lewandowski scored 41 goals in 2020/21, breaking a record set by Gerd Müller. This season, Lewandowski has scored 25 goals in 20 games for Bayern. Together with Ajax’s Sébastien Haller, Lewandowski leads the Champions League in scoring. Messi has been out of form ever since he left Barcelona for PSG.
Ballon d’Or 2021: Donnarumma best goalkeeper, Pedri wins Trophée Kopa
The Bundesliga, therefore, remains without a trophy at the Ballon d’Or awards since Matthias Sammer won it in 1996. But the best striker award aside, the German top-flight also missed out on other trophies. Gianluigi Donnarumma ranked ahead of Manuel Neuer. Dortmund’s Jude Bellingham and Bayern’s Jamal Musiala lost out in the Trophée Kopa, awarded as the best youth player to Barcelona’s Pedri. Another Barcelona player also got to celebrate. Spain’s Alexia Putellas won the Ballon d’Or as the best women’s player. The award for the best team went to Chelsea.
