Kalvin Phillips is set to leave Leeds United and join Manchester City. The Athletic reported on Friday, that both clubs have held positive talks this week and that a transfer to the Etihad is nearing its conclusion. The 26-year-old England international will join Manchester City in a deal worth £42 million (€48 million) initially, plus performance-based add-ons of up to £3 million (€3.5 million). Including bonuses, Phillips would become the most expensive departure in Leeds United’s history (overview).

At Man City, Phillips will become the 14th most expensive signing in club history sandwiched between Leroy Sané and Bernardo Silva (overview). Phillips is considered Pep Guardiola’s key target to strengthen the midfield. The 26-year-old defensive midfielder will become the club’s second major signing this summer after Man City have already secured forward Erling Haaland from Borussia Dortmund. Once the Phillips deal is completed, City’s transfer spending will rise to €111.5 million the most of any club in the summer transfer window.

Leeds United, in the meantime, have already spent €57.84 million this summer. Although the Phillips transfer will be the first major outgoing transfer, the club managed by American Jesse Marsch will be looking to replace Phillips quickly. One target is US men’s national team midfielder Tyler Adams from RB Leipzig. Adams has seen his time limited at theBundesliga side and could be looking for a fresh start at his former New York Red Bulls bench boss.
