Waived no trade clause
US men’s national team striker Gyasi Zardes has been traded from the Columbus Crew to the Colorado Rapids in exchange for $300,000 in 2022 General Allocation Money (GAM). The Crew could also receive an additional $1.1 million in GAM if Zardes reaches certain performance metrics and re-signs with the club for an additional three years following the 2022 season—a total fee of $1.4 million would make Zardes one of the most expensive signings in club history.
“Gyasi is an elite level attacker with a strong history of production and a successful track record both in MLS and with the U.S. Men’s National Team,” Colorado Rapids general manager Pádraig Smith said in a club statement “His character, mentality, experience, and goal-scoring prowess will greatly benefit our team. We’re thrilled to bolster our offense with his signing and look forward to welcoming him to Colorado.”
Zardes waived his no-trade clause for the deal and will be a Designated Player at the Rapids. Zardes has been on the trading block since the start of the Major League Soccer season as the Columbus Crew have been exploring avenues to create more roster flexibility. Zardes, in turn, wanted to join a club that could guarantee him playing time ahead of the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.
