Most games for Real Madrid
Long-time Argentine national team player Gonzalo Higuaín has announced his retirement from professional football at the end of the Major League Soccer season. The 34-year-old announced his decision at a press conference on Monday. Inter Miami CF have two games left in the regular season and are currently on a playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. Higuaín has been in tremendous form lately, scoring 12 goals and two assists in the last 14 league games.
Higuaín joined Inter Miami in 2020 as Designated Player (DP). Born in France, the Argentine started his professional career at River Plate, and the played for Real Madrid, Napoli, Juventus, AC Milan, and, finally, Chelsea. Altogether, Higuaín generated €159 million in transfer fees; only ten players have accumulated more money through transfers. Higuaín’s €90m transfer from Napoli to Juventus remains the second most expansive deal in Serie A history.

The striker played the majority of his club games for Real Madrid. Between 2007 and 2017, Higuaín scored 121 goals and 56 assists in 264 games for Los Blancos and won three LaLiga titles. Higuaín had his best time at Napoli, where he scored 91 goals and 26 assists in 146 games. The Argentine won the Scudetto and the Coppa three times each. The Coppa Higuaín won with Napoli once and twice with Juventus. In 2016, the season before he joined Juventus, Higuaín won the golden boot in Italy with 36 Serie A goals.
Higuaín retires – World Cup and Copa América a blemish
At the national team level, Higuaín’s career remains incomplete. The striker participated in three World Cups (2010, 2014, and 2018) and reached the final in 2014. But despite having several opportunities, Higuaín failed to beat German keeper Manuel Neuer, and Germany won the game 1-0. With Argentina, he also lost two Copa América finals. Chile was the obstacle both at the Copa América 2015 (1-4 after penalties) and then again one year later at the Copa América Centenario (2-4 after penalties) in the United States.
In April, Higuaín categorically denied a statement by his father that he would retire at the end of the season. “It was a misunderstanding,” Higuaín said as part of a media scrum. “I never told him I was retiring. He misspoke, and that can happen, but this is very far from reality. I am focused on my club, on fulfilling my contract, and when the time comes, if that decision is made, I will be the one communicating it, only me.”
Higuaín has long been critical of the football business and is likely to turn his back on the game. “You are interesting as long as you play,” Higuaín said in an interview with Spox. “After that, nobody cares anymore. I have known that for years.” Higuaín appears to be finished with the football business. “It damages you.”
