almost sold in the summer

Mohamed Salah undoubtedly stole the headlines on Wednesday night thanks to his five-minute hat-trick in Liverpool’s 7-1 demolition of Rangers in Group A of the Champions League. However, while fans of the Anfield side would have been cheering on their Egyptian star and their team’s qualification for the Last 16, another player was also on show and put on an equally impressive performance.

Alongside Salah’s three goals, Liverpool were also able to once again call upon the talent of Roberto Firmino, who played an equally important role in the famous victory, with two goals and an assist to his name. And a growing sense that the Brazil international may be bouncing back from an extended run of poor form and may well be ready to once again shine for Liverpool.

Once the forgotten man – Firmino almost left in the summer

Indeed, while Liverpool pushed to make history last season by seriously challenging in every competition they took part in, Firmino was unfortunately relegated to the role of supporting cast while the likes of Salah, Diogo Jota and Sadio Mané took centre stage. A hamstring injury in early November was followed by a COVID infection and then further muscle problems and a foot injury in the second half of the campaign. In total, Firmino may have picked up 11 goals and five assists, but he missed no less than 26 games through injury.

Such was Firmino’s fall from grace that much of the summer window was dominated by speculation over the player being sold by Liverpool. Not only had Jota taken his spot in the side, but the Anfield side had also signed Luis Díaz and Darwin Núñez since the start of last season for a combined €122 million. Apparently, Firmino was no longer needed at the Premier League side.

A star reborn – Firmino back on track at Anfield

And yet, now a few months into the new season, few Liverpool fans would doubt that Firmino has perhaps been Jürgen Klopp’s most important player to date. Injuries to both Jota and Díaz, as well as a red-card suspension for Núñez in the early rounds of the new season have meant that Firmino has started seven of Liverpool’s opening 10 games of the season and in return he has provided an impressive six goals and three assists.

When we add that tally to Firmino’s midweek exploits at Ibrox, we find that the player is sitting on eight goals and four assists from just 12 appearances this season. Not only does that work out at a goal or assists every 58 minutes for the Anfield side, but it’s also a tally that is matched only by Salah in Klopp’s entire squad. Firmino may be a little older than he once was, but he’s showing this season that he’s still one of Liverpool’s most important players.
